LONDON, 21 MAY 2021 – Malaysian infrastructure conglomerate MTD Group is pleased to announce the practical completion of its prestigious scheme One Crown Place in London’s EC2. The construction milestone was delivered ahead of schedule.
Following a successful construction phase, the £518 million mixed-use scheme on the fringes of the City of London has now been completed by Mace, a global construction and consultancy firm and main contractors for One Crown Place. With the completion earlier than anticipated despite the project’s unique design that represented a complex construction challenge, the landmark address of One Crown Place will leave a lasting legacy for London.
Embracing the old-meets-new character of the City of London and Hackney, One Crown Place is a welcome contrast to the capital’s many glass towers, artfully combining original heritage buildings with striking modern architecture imagined by Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF). The development sets a new standard of architecture for the London skyline. Two prismatic towers host 246 private apartments, rising 28 and 33 storeys into the sky, with beautifully crafted contemporary interiors from Bowler James Brindley. At ground level stands a 6-storey building - home to 10,650sqm of high-quality office space, with a dedicated office reception designed by Design Haus Liberty, and a variety of retail units, whilst a boutique hotel and members’ club occupies the fully restored Georgian terrace on Sun Street.
Build works began onsite at the distinctive development in April 2018, and One Crown Place’s northernmost building ‘topped-out’ in Autumn 2019, followed by the southernmost building in early 2020. The interior fit-out of the apartments and the hotel fit-out commenced in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
Global property firm CBRE was appointed by MTD Group in 2015 to act as development manager and project manager to market the site’s 246 private apartments and 140,000 sq ft of commercial space.
MTD Group Head of International Real Estate & Properties and Director of AMTD London Development Co Ltd, Tee Kim Siew, said: “We are proud to announce the practical completion of this iconic mixed-use development in Central London. This is a major milestone for MTD Group and we would like to thank the Mace team as well as the One Crown Place Project team for exceeding our expectations and delivering our vision for the landmark scheme to the highest standards ahead of schedule. This is an incredible achievement in the current circumstances and one that is borne out of the benefits of ‘One Team’ culture. With One Crown Place, we’ve brought a new vibrant destination to life, creating a new live-work hub in an enviable location that is not just Monday-Friday, nine-to-five. We look forward to introducing One Crown Place to the Capital.”
Henry Robinson, Executive Director, Head of Development Management UK at CBRE, said: “Together with MTD Group, we are thrilled One Crown Place has reached completion. MTD Group placed a huge amount of trust in their UK team and this flowed through all elements of the project from designers to suppliers to build this new vibrant, premium destination for London. To do this during a worldwide pandemic and ahead of our delivery target, was a tribute to everyone that was involved, especially the supply chain on site.”
Gareth Lewis, CEO for Construct at Mace, said: “Working alongside MTD Group whose leadership and vision was vital for the landmark scheme’s success, we strived for an innovative approach to deliver One Crown Place. Redefining the boundaries of construction delivery, our team used new digital tools and cutting-edge structural steel installation as part of our delivery strategy. This project represented a complex construction challenge; and I’m very proud that our hard work has delivered such an iconic new skyscraper for London.”
John Bushell, Design Principal, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, said: “One Crown Place is a testament to collaboration and the combined efforts of an incredibly strong team. MTD Group were totally committed to the vision of a mixed-use development that will become a new destination on the edge of the City. We are incredibly proud to have played a part in shaping that vision into this landmark building, with practical completion delivered in exemplary fashion by Mace.”
